In closing, TeXworks is by all means a simple and reliable application that you can use to edit TeX files in a simple manner. It now takes up to 25 () minutes when starting and consumes about one-and-a-half cores of my CPU while doing so: I have no idea what it is doing during this time.

A few weeks ago, TeXworks started to hang on startup. A while ago I was struggling to obtain TeXworks working correctly with MikTeX -圆4 under Windows 7-圆4 and after a marathon I managed to correctly match the appropriate extensions with the registry (it seemed all was going to be fine). The General tab is the first tab, and the language is chosen in the drop down-menu at the bottom. The Edit menu is the second from the left, and the preferences is the bottom entry. This may help with the scaling for those programs If that does not work for you, I also recommend Sublime Text 3, with LaTeXing (or LaTeXTools). Under the Compatibility tab, check Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.

When viewing a PDF file, the interface of the application changes slightly to accommodate new buttons that provide you with zooming and magnification features. I have a MiKTeX installation on Windows 10 on a relatively powerful machine. To change the interface language of the TeXworks editor, go to Edit -> Preferences -> General. Right click the program and go to properties.

While you can not edit the documents you can view them just as well as you would using a PDF reader. The application also provides you with PDF viewing capabilities. Moreover, you get to choose the type of ‘Auto-indent Mode’ and ‘Smart Quotes’.īeing a TeX based editor, it also provides you with a large number of typesets you can choose from. You are also capable of changing the font style, add and remove comments, toggle line numbers and wrap lines, as well as display syntax coloring. You can use its search function to find specific content and replace it, copy to found text and highlight the selection. TeXworks looks like a simple application but underneath the well designed graphical user interface, if features a wide array of helpful and practical tools. Since the editor is Unicode based, it also provides you with quick access settings for the encoding style and offers you the possibility to easily jump to a specific line of text. You get a large and clean text editing field that makes it that much easier to write and stylize the content.

This is a design choice, because such workflows are considered too advanced for the beginning user. One limitation of TeXworks is, that it does not by itself support multi-stage typesetting, like, for example, PNG or SVG output via intermediate DVI. MiKTeX 2.8 (and 2.9) comes bundled with TeXworks, even in the base installation. TeXworks requires a TeX installation: TeX Live, MiKTeX, or MacTeX. The basic system is a quick set-up that automatically pulls packages off the internet as you need them.

Kew argued against complex user interfaces like that of TeXnicCenter or Kile, which he described as intimidating for new users. MikTeX is simple to install - just go to the MikTeX Homepage and download a (basic system or complete system) setup wizard. The developer of TeXworks is Jonathan Kew (who also developed XeTeX), who deliberately modelled TeXworks on Richard Koch’s award-winning TeXShop software for macOS to lower the entry barrier to the TeX world for those using desktop operating systems other than macOS. It has a built-in PDF viewer using the poppler library the viewer has auto-refresh capability, and also features SyncTeX support (which allows the user to synchronize the PDF viewer position with the source, and vice versa with a single click). It is a Qt-based graphical user interface to the TeX typesetting system and its LaTeX, ConTeXt, and XeTeX extensions.
